The ancient city of Pompeii, lying in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, once again opens the doors to the past. Recent excavations have uncovered an enormous thermal bath complex, thought to have belonged to an elite resident of the city. This discovery proves once again that Pompeii is not only a city buried under volcanic ash, but also a time capsule reflecting the luxury and sophistication of ancient Roman life.
This thermal bath, discovered during excavations in the ‘Regio IX’ area of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, is one of the largest and most advanced baths ever discovered in the city. The fact that the bath had a direct connection to a dining hall shows that for the ancient Romans, baths were not only for cleaning, but also an indispensable part of socialising and feasting.
Before the catastrophe of 79 AD, Pompeians relaxed, socialised and even held banquets in these luxurious baths. This discovery gives us a deeper insight into the lifestyle, architecture and social structure of ancient Roman society.
