UK to Implement Visa Requirements for Holders of Turkish Diplomatic Passports and Other Countries

Diplomatic sources speaking to Türkiye Today confirmed media reports that the United Kingdom will impose visa requirements on holders of diplomatic passports from Türkiye.

Visa Requirements for Turkish Diplomatic Passports and Other Nations

This announcement follows reports about the U.K.’s new border control strategy, called the “Border Transformation and Modernization Program.” This program includes a Universal Permission to Travel system. Under this framework, diplomatic passport holders can obtain a visa through a simplified, cost-free application process. They will not need to apply in person.

Authorities stressed that this decision aligns with a global trend in border policy. It is not specifically aimed at Türkiye. A report from the Turkish daily Sözcü suggested that the U.K. would require visas for members of Türkiye’s Parliament and government ministers, including their families traveling for personal reasons. However, official sources clarified that the new travel authorization system applies to all foreign visitors, regardless of nationality.

Mandatory Pre-Travel Authorization for All Foreign Nationals

Similar to the European Union’s recent pre-travel authorization requirements for visa-exempt countries, the U.K. has introduced a comparable system. The “Universal Permission to Travel” initiative requires all foreign visitors to obtain travel authorization before entering the U.K. Starting April 2, 2025, passport holders from visa-exempt countries, including those from the EU and the U.S., must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their trip.

Simplified Visa Process for Diplomatic Passport Holders Starting March 2025

A new simplified visa application process will begin for diplomatic passport holders on March 11, 2025. This policy applies to all countries whose diplomatic passport holders are currently exempt from visa requirements. Under this scheme, diplomatic passport holders will receive a visa automatically. They will not need to apply in person, and there will be no cost.

Officials reiterated that this is not an exclusive measure for Türkiye. It is part of the U.K.’s comprehensive global border security strategy.
