Tsar Nicholas II’s Hunting Lodge at Risk of Collapse Due to Neglect
The hunting lodge of Tsar Nicholas II in Sarıkamış, Kars, faces a serious risk of collapse due to neglect. Locally known as “Nikolay’s Hunting Lodge,” this 28-room building covers about 6,500 square meters and is located in one of Türkiye’s key winter tourism centers.
Built in the 19th century, the lodge features Baltic architectural elements. Unfortunately, part of the historic structure is now used as an animal shelter. Other sections have fallen into disrepair, with broken trees and graffiti on the walls. Visitors have voiced their concerns about the lodge’s condition and stressed the need for its protection. Rasim Kaya, a visitor from Istanbul, said, “This place is beautiful, but no one has the right to destroy historical artifacts. We must respect our heritage. If restored, this place could be even more stunning.”
Historical Importance of the Hunting Lodge
Constructed in 1896 without nails, the hunting lodge once welcomed esteemed guests. Over the years, the main lodge served as a hospital and a palace. While many call it “Catherine’s Lodge,” it originally functioned as a rehabilitation center for Tsar Nicholas II’s sick son, Alexei. The lodge also served as a hunting retreat for the family during winter and summer.
The current state of the lodge highlights the urgent need for restoration efforts. Preserving this important piece of history is essential for future generations.
