Commemorative Coins Issued for Mahmutbey Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
A commemorative coin has been issued for Mahmutbey Mosque, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mahmutbey Mosque is renowned for its unique architectural features and rich history, making it a valuable part of Türkiye‘s cultural heritage.
Under the auspices of the Kastamonu Governorship and coordinated by the North Anatolia Development Agency (KUZKA), extensive efforts over nearly four years have culminated in the recognition of Mahmut Bey Mosque, located in Kasaba village of Kastamonu’s central district, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. This mosque, commonly referred to as the “Nail-less Mosque,” has been registered under the category of “Medieval Wooden Column and Beam Mosques of Anatolia.”
Projects and Initiatives Following UNESCO Recognition
Following its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List, various projects and initiatives have been launched concerning Mahmut Bey Mosque. One significant development is the issuance of commemorative coins by the General Directorate of the Mint and Stamp Printing House, which aims to promote the mosque and its historical significance.
Details of the Commemorative Coin Release
The commemorative coin, related to the Mahmut Bey Mosque built in 1366, will be available for sale on January 17, Friday, at 11:00 AM. This coin holds great importance for the promotion of Mahmut Bey Mosque, which is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Statements from the Governor
In a statement on social media, Governor Meftun Dallı highlighted the significance of Mahmut Bey Mosque, one of Kastamonu’s most valuable historical artifacts that entered the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 2023. He expressed gratitude to A. Yasir Şahin, the General Director of the Mint and Stamp Printing House, and all those involved in this initiative.
Governor Dallı noted, “Constructed in 1366 during the Candaroğulları Beyliği period by Mahmut Bey, the Mahmut Bey Mosque, located in Kasaba village of our central district, is commonly known as the ‘Nail-less Mosque’ due to its unique construction technique. I thank the General Director of the Mint and Stamp Printing House, A. Yasir Şahin, his staff, and everyone who contributed to this effort on behalf of Kastamonu.”
