Far right decides Austria’s general election

According to the first unofficial results of the general elections in Austria, the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) came first with 29.1 percent of the vote. This is the first time since World War II that the far-right party has come first in an election in the country.

According to the exit poll shared by public broadcaster ORF, 40 percent of the votes were counted and the turnout rate was 78.1 percent.

The far-right FPÖ, which has been ranked first in opinion polls since the election date was announced, is leading with 29.1 percent of the vote.

The ruling center-right Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), the major partner of the government, is in second place with 26.3 percent and the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) is in third place with 20.6 percent.

The Green Party, the junior partner in the government, received 8.8 percent of the vote, while the liberal New Austria Party (NEOS) received 9 percent.
