Tragic Incident in Istanbul: 11 Lives Lost to Counterfeit Alcohol in Just 24 Hours

In a heartbreaking incident in Istanbul, 11 people have died in the last 24 hours after consuming counterfeit alcohol. Among the victims are three citizens from Turkmenistan, leading authorities to arrest two suspects in connection with the case.

A total of 38 individuals, including 26 foreign nationals, sought medical help at various hospitals due to issues related to counterfeit alcohol. This alarming situation highlights the serious dangers of illegal alcohol production and distribution in the city.

Investigation Launched

The Başakşehir Public Security Bureau has initiated an investigation following the deaths of Agajan Bashımov and Rahmatullah Artıkov, both from Turkmenistan. Additionally, Myrat P., Myrat S., and Allahyar A. are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

Authorities discovered that the counterfeit alcohol was sold by Agazhan O. and Amangul D. at a business on Gürsu Street in the Ziya Gökalp neighborhood. Investigators also found that the suspects were producing counterfeit alcohol in a nearby residence.

In a coordinated operation, law enforcement arrested the two suspects, ramping up efforts to tackle the illegal alcohol trade in the area.

Businesses selling counterfeit alcohol are being shut down

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül announced that the licenses of 63 establishments selling counterfeit alcohol have been revoked and those businesses have been shut down. In a social media post, Governor Gül stated, “The licenses of 63 establishments selling counterfeit alcohol have been canceled and closed. Everyone responsible for causing death through the sale of counterfeit or illegal alcohol will be identified and brought to justice. Please be cautious! Death cases are on the rise.”
