Türkiye criticizes US decision to extend arms embargo on Cyprus

Türkiye The Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized the US decision to extend the arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus for another year as of October 1, 2024. The TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that increasing armament will harm the balances in the region.

In a post made on the social media account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was announced that “The US decision to lift the arms embargo on the SCGA in September 2020, expand its scope in 2022 and extend it in 2023, will be extended again for one year as of October 1, 2024. We agree with the views expressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in its statement on this issue. This grave mistake will increase the armament on the island and damage the delicate balances in the region. In the face of the increasing armament activities of the SCGA, we believe that the TRNC will take all measures to increase its defense and deterrence capability.”
