Meyil Obruk Lake, one of Türkiye’s natural wonders, has completely dried up.
It was determined that the 31-meter-deep water of Meyil Obruk Lake, which is famous for its karstic structure and pink color towards the summer season, located within the borders of Konya’s Karatay district, disappeared.
The pink color is given to Meyil Obruk Lake by dunaliella salina microorganisms that increase due to increasing temperature and decreasing water level.
Konya Technical University Geology Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. Yaşar Eren said that Meyil Obruk Lake is Turkey’s largest lake containing water.
“In the past years, it was really a natural work, a monument in terms of tourism with its different color tones.” Eren said, ”According to the situation in 2020, we see a complete drying in Meyil Lake. In 1970, 31 meters of water depth was measured. Now, 31 meters of water has disappeared.”
